Beyond the Balance Sheet: Lessons from 193 Countries

Solly (Solomon) Gerber emigrated from Johannesburg to Melbourne in January 1988 and joined the newly formed Collins Club. At that time it had about 15 members. Until he moved to Sydney about 30 years ago he was a regular attendee.

He has practised as an accountant and then combined as a barrister for 60 years, specialising in advising on complex tax matters, particularly in the area of local and international trusts, and high net worth individuals. 

To keep his sanity, he has pursued his interest in international affairs and his passion for travel. In 2004 he was the first Australian to visit every one of the 193 countries in the world – reported on in The Age newspaper. He has been to most of the 300 destinations of the Travelers Century Club, climbed most of the highest mountains, walked the most famous tracks, travelled the famous rail journeys, been to almost all the national parks in Australia and around the world. He has been on over 35 cruises around the world and crossed all of the seas. He has driven to every state in the USA including “Route 66”.

Solly will share some brief insights into the Australian tax system, and talk about some of his many interesting, challenging and dangerous experiences in the course of his travels and adventures around the world. He quips that “if he goes to heaven he can have a very meaningful discussion with the Creator about the world He made”.
